Meningitis Update

Due to recent events in Kent we are receiving a large number of enquiries regarding vaccinations for meningitis.

There are 2 immunisations given in England for meningitis. One is for strains ACWY and another for a variety of Meningitis B strains.
From Aug 2015 children in Year 9 were offered immunisation against Meningitis ACWY, replacing the previous Meningitis C vaccine.

If you are not sure whether your child has been vaccinated at school for Meningitis ACWY, please contact 020 3903 3373 or [email protected]. This vaccine if missed can be given up to the age of 25 years.

The South London Children and Young People’s Community Immunisation Service (CYPCIS) delivers all school-age immunisations across south London, in Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Greenwich, Kingston, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton, Richmond, Southwark, Sutton and Wandsworth.

We do not have the school immunisation data available in patient records.

Since 2015 all babies are offered a vaccine against Meningitis B at 8 weeks and 12 weeks.

For children born before 2015 there was no meningitis B vaccine available in the NHS immunisation schedule. The NHS reviewed the evidence and decided not to offer a catch up programme to those children, now teenagers, born after 2015 who did not receive Meningitis B vaccine as a baby. The meningitis B vaccine is only available on the NHS for babies, not for teenagers.

If you child has missed their vaccinations at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks, or pre school please do book with our nurses so these can still be given to protect your child.
